BORTHWICK CASTLE

Built in 1430, after Sir William de Borthwick grew unbearably jealous of his neighbor’s castle, Borthwick is nestled a mere thirty minutes southeast of Edinburgh. The castle was a refuge for Mary Queen of Scots and her murderous third husband James (1567), and a target for Oliver Cromwell’s army during the English Civil Wars (1650); resultant damage from the attack is still visible today.

Sir William de Borthwick, married thrice, though never at Borthwick Castle, described his fortress as “unusually tall and unusually thick.” We hope you’ll agree.
